Watermelon Picnic Blanket

I have had this pattern, and the fabric for this quilt top for almost a year! But as part of a New Years Resolution, I decided to work on all of those UFOS! I love the look of a log cabin and all that you can do with it! I originally saw this pattern in a Keepsake Quilting catalog and then again at a quilt shop in an Amish quilt shop on my anniversary. I bought it and the fabric to make it after we got back then never did anything with it. And to be quite honest, even though it is a beginner project I do not like making log cabin blocks. But this one was time well spent! I plan on using this as a picnic blanket this summer. Perhaps a date with my husband or a picnic with my nephew. So now, the big question is, what should I do with the back? I am not sure if I should try and put a protective laminated vinyl on the back or just a muslin backing since it will be on the ground, then again, I LOVE to cover up with a may options that I would love feedback on! Please let me know what you think.
